ELEGANCE AND RELEVANCE

Jack Guiness for BOLERO MAN

  • Black and white portrait of a person wearing a wide-brim hat, with hands crossed and rings on fingers.

    Sign Language

I photographed numerous fashion editorials and covers with fashion editor Martina Riebeck for Swiss fashion magazines BOLERO and BOLERO MAN. The uniqueness about this collaboration was our non-verbal communication. Together we created fashion photos that speak more than we did during the shootings.

    Tanel Derard for BOLERO MAN

  • Two shirtless men in black pants performing a choreographed dance against a white background in a black and white photo.

    The Haywire Syndrome

Berlin tries again and again to establish itself as an international fashion city and fails again and again. And still carries on. For me a metaphor of fashion itself.

  • Black and white portrait of a person with long hair partially covering their face, posed with a hand over their mouth and nose.

    Fashion Fusion

What does a record cover have to do with fashion? A lot, as fashion, music and art are the siblings that inspire each other. Eva Padberg is not only a fashion model, but also part of the duo DAPAYK & PADBERG and thus the best example of the interplay of genres.

In my opinion, you don’t have to understand a fashion photo. You just have to feel something.

    The Elegance of Humour

Over the years I became aware that there is a causal connection between humour and elegance. And there is a fine line between humor and ridiculousness that is just as fine as that between elegance and vulgarity. And yes, there are these people, these models, who never appear vulgar in photos - no matter how they are styled or staged. One of these unusual personalities is Diana Dietrich - a friend and muse.

Diana Dietrich aka Diana Gaertner for BOLERO

  • Black and white photo of a man in a patterned robe and briefs standing outdoors with bare feet, surrounded by bare branches and concrete wall.

    Garden of Delights

The influence an outstanding location can have on the photographer, the team and especially on the protagonist is undisputed. At Villa Fornasetti Aeneas Kolev was the eccentric master of the house for one day.

  • Irresistible

For me, a good fashion photo is a photo that is irresistible. Be it through the fashion, the staging or the person who is shown. And ideally, the photo is a simple, candid photo. Like this one with almost heavenly beautiful Alek Wek.

  • Black and white photo of a woman wearing a sheer dress, with her hair flowing dramatically; shown in two poses against a dark background.

    Change and Exchange

There is hardly anything more inspiring than the exchange with other creative people from the most diverse genres – one reason why we founded the PRINTKULTUR publishing house in 2004 to publish VORN. The magazine gave all kinds of creatives freedom for experimentation and displayed their new approaches without restrictions. Fashion photography was also able to break new ground and free itself from the stigma of superficiality.

  • Close-up of a woman with red lipstick wearing a polka-dot headscarf against a yellow background.

    World Wide Web

When I shot the campaign for the launch of VOGUE.COM in 2000, I knew something fundamentally new was about to begin. But it was surprising though that the Internet changed the world and us so substantially.

    Veza for www.vogue.com

  • Black and white photo of a couple kissing, with the man wearing a tuxedo and the woman in a strapless dress, against a black background.

    Working Man

I have photographed fashion editorials and covers for nearly 200 different magazines so far. All in all thousands of pages for established publications as well as for underground magazines.

Excerpts from selected editorials from 1998 until 2012 can be found in my first monograph PHOTOGRAPHS + THE WALLPAPER YEARS.
